Brief History

Golconda, derived from Telugu words Golla Konda (Shepherd's Hill) had played a major role in the polity of Medieval Deccan. Originally it was under the control of Kakatiyas, then under Bahamanis (1518 CE), Qutb Shahis (1518-1687), Mughals (1687-1707) and finally Asifjahis (Nizams) held it. It has three lined fortification with a moat around covering an area of 7 km and marked by 8 gates and 87 bastions mounted with canons, rendering the fort one of the strongest in the Medieval Deccan. The Citadel (Bala Hissar) is within an inner fortification.

The important edifices here are the imposing Aslah Khana (a three-storeyed armoury building), Nagina Bagh, Guard lines, Akkanna-Madanna offices, Ramdas jail, Durbar Hall, ruins of Amber khana, Baradari on the summit, an inner cordon wall and Ibrahim Mosque, Taramati Mosque, Rani Mahal, Kilwat, Mortury bath. The water management systems are provided to serve the water requirements of various Mahals within high walled palaces, other apartments gardens and roof gardens.
